Amnesty International has filed a report with the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in preparation for a hearing before the Committee regarding Canada's record on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Canada will appear before the Committee on May 5 and 8, 2006, in Geneva.

Part of the Amnesty International report is focused on the plight of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, with a section specifically regarding the tragic situation of the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation and the failure of the Canadian government to resolve this long-standing human rights issue.

Amnesty International's brief, title "IT IS A MATTER OF RIGHTS: Improving the protection of economic, social and cultural rights in Canada", can be downloaded by clicking here. (pdf format)

Their report concludes: "In November 2005 the Human Rights Committee renewed its call for Canada to make every effort to resume negotiations "with a view to finding a solution which respects the rights of the Band." In the absence of a such a solution the culture and welfare of the Lubicon Cree remains in jeopardy."
