Assembly of Chiefs unamimously call for expedited resolution of Lubicon land rights

Last month the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs of Alberta voted unanimously to support a resolution calling on the governments of Canada and Alberta to "expedite resolution to the outstanding claims of the Lubicon First Nation."

The Chiefs noted that "there is a need to deliver a strong and unified message to the Crown from this Assembly in support of the Lubicon First Nation and its citizens."

The Assembly includes Chiefs from Treaties 6, 7 and 8.

Resolutions of this sort from organizations in all walks of life -- unions, political parties, non-governmental organizations, faith groups, constituency, neighbourhood, ratepayer, business and professional associations -- are a welcome boost to the Lubicon people’s efforts to achieve a just resolution of their land rights.

ASSEMBLY OF TREATY CHIEFS
RESOLUTION

Subject: Support for the Lubicon First Nation

WHEREAS the Chiefs of Treaty No. 6, Treaty No. 7 and Treaty No. 8 (Alberta) met at a duly convened meeting in Calgary, Alberta and duly considered the current unsettled status of the Lubicon First Nations negotiations; and

WHEREAS the Lubicon First Nations continues to pursue its rightful interests with respect to all of its rights with the Crown in Right of Canada and Alberta; and

WHEREAS there is a need to deliver a strong and unified message to the Crown from this Assembly in support of the Lubicon First Nation and its citizens;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Chiefs strongly urge Canada and Alberta to expedite resolution to the outstanding claims of the Lubicon First Nation.
