Honourable Chuck Strahl,
I am writing with regard to the desperate situation faced by the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation. Legitimate concerns have been raised by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Housing, Miloon Kothari, who expressed that the most basic of needs such as water and sanitation services were severely lacking.
I request urgent action and a possible moratorium on new oil and extraction activities in the Lubicon region. As well there must be substantial progress made in alleviating the poverty and social challenges the Lubicon face. The existence of such conditions in one of our Canadian communities is appalling and must be rectified.
Sincerely,
Dr. Keith Martin, M.D., P.C., M.P.
Member of Parliament for Esquimalt - Juan de Fuca
