Photos of Lubicon land cleared by contractors for Deep Well

On March 2, 2005, Lubicon people discovered contractors clearing a large area in their Traditional Territory on behalf of Deep Well. The contractors were asked to halt further operations until a meeting could take place between the company and the Lubicon Chief and Council. Although Deep Well's former Chief Operating Officer, John Brown, met with the Lubicon Chief the next day, he claimed to have no authority with the company and therefore agreed to set up a meeting the next week with senior company representatives. Since that time no one from Deep Well has contacted the Lubicon Chief and Council and no meeting has taken place.

Below are some photos of Lubicon land cleared by contractors for Deep Well. Two sites were cleared: one for a drilling rig, and one across the road for a well site. Clearing the latter area included clear-cutting and stacking approximately 18 truck-loads of spruce trees and twelve truck-loads of poplar trees. High resolution versions of the photos below are available upon request from FOL.
